How do i get my husband/partner to try yoga?
Seriously though? You’ve gone to yoga you know the benefits; so why is it so damn hard to get your man into yoga? (P.S. these tips will work with any one who you have been trying to get into yoga but we will focus on the boys today.) I hear this all the time from my female students so let’s see why it’s so hard to get men into the yoga studio.
The Numbers
First the facts according to a study conducted by the yoga journal about “72% of yogis are woman and 28% are men.” Thats not so bad and as yoga continues to grow in popularity the number of men taking classes is growing everyday. So how do we get your boy to be part of the 28%? How about a history’s lesson?
Yoga used to be an all male practice!
Believe it or not up until 1937 yoga was practiced exclusively by men. It wasn’t until Indra Devi was accepted to study under Sri Krishnamacharya. She then helped spread yoga to the west with her new found mastery of yoga. So shout out to Indra thanks girl.
We want to be good at everything.
Well not just men but especially men. No one wants to look silly and men are very competitive maybe its something in our nature. So bringing us into a room full of woman touching their tongues to their elbows while we can’t touch our toes can be, well intimidating. Yoga is not a competition and a good yoga teacher will help you discover that. However if your man has never been before his competitive nature may kick in. Which may be a good thing because he might want to keep going to get better at yoga.
I’m not Flexible enough
This has got to be the most played out excuse people use to not come to yoga. So heres a few way to overcome this. Find a private setting. One reason we think we are not flexible enough is because we compare ourselves to other people who may have been practicing for many years. However if we are in a park or at home we wont have to worry about comparison and we will be able to enjoy the practice more.
Influential men who do yoga men
There are many influential men who practice yoga athletes, rockstars, movie stars etc. Yoga is good cross training for almost every activity. Once your partner sees all the men who they look up to do yoga they wont help but be inspired to give it a try. Monkey see monkey do right? Heres a short list of famous male yogis Shaq O Neil, Lebron James, Messi, Joe Rogan, Sting, David Beckam, The New Zealand rugby team (might as well be the baddest mofos on the planet.)
Private lessons
Sure its a little on the pricey side but if you’ve been struggling to get your man inside the yoga space it may be worth it! Talk to your favorite yoga teacher about their rates. Most yoga teachers will be happy to work with you at their studio or even come to your house. A bonus is your man will feel less intimidated and will have less to “prove” in a private setting. If your local to OC/LA/San Diego you can book me for a private lesson by clicking here.
Youtube
It couldn’t be easier than to set up your phone or stream it on to your TV via Apple TV , Chrome Cast or Fire Stick at home. Of course the best thing would be to pop into a yoga studio but sometimes thats just not possible with how busy we are. YouTube is a great option for you to introduce your man into yoga in a low stress environment. Clear some space in your living room and bust out a YouTube video and try some yoga together. Another great thing about YouTube is you can try a 10 minute session & not be committed for a full hour. If that works & he likes it then maybe you might see your guy in a yoga studio one day! You can check out my videos by clicking this link if you like the videos please subscribe so you know when the latest content comes out!
Plan a yoga date!
Look ladies if you want your man to go to a yoga studio plan it out! Make it a day he would enjoy go for a hike, the beach, a bike ride, golfing whatever activity he likes. Then cap it off your date with a little yoga. Many yoga studios offer free trials so if your on a budget this is a great option. Then eat at favorite place or if your on a budget cook a meal together at home. He will LOVE all the thought you put into the day. Even if yoga isn’t his thing. He’ll appreciate the thoughtfulness you put into it and he’ll enjoy the other parts of the day.
Acroyoga
You knew it was coming Acroyoga! Sure it’s not like regular yoga but it will make your man feel strong being able to lift you in the air! Also you will learn ways to communicate and connect with each other. Plus you will both learn some new party tricks! I have a lot of content on how to get started here is a video on how to do the basic Acroyoga postures & here is a blog post on how to get started!
